Historical Development of Criminology
التطور التاريخي لعلم الإجرام
The history of punishment is long and old.
But the history of criminology of man's systematic attempts to explain crime-is short and new.
First, man thought that the criminals were possessed by a supernatural powerful evil spirit or devil which impels them to commit crime.
أولى المحاولات لتفسير الجريمة كان يعتقد أن المجرم يرتكب الجريمة بدافع من قوى وأرواح شريرة وشيطان يسيطير عليه ويدفعه إلى ارتكابها
A less supernatural and more rational explanation of crime was seen in the eighteenth-century writings
بدأ التفسير العلمي لشرح الجريمة ومعرفة أسباب ارتكابها منذ القرن الثامن عشر من خلال كتابات علماء المدرسة التقليدية
of the classical school of penologists, especially those of Beccaria.
In 1885, Italian law professor Raffaele Garofalo coined the term "criminology" (in Italian, criminologia).
